Good news for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): a new treatment could be marketed very soon.
A treatment that reverses the disease
Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease, linked to a dysfunction of the immune system. It is characterized by a rash on the face, in the form of a mask called a wolf, hence its name lupus (wolf in Latin), but also great fatigue and joint pain. To relieve its effects, doctors prescribe immunosuppressants.
While no specific therapy currently exists to effectively combat this pathology, the work of immunologist Sylviane Muller could represent great hope for patients. This researcher, who works in the laboratory of the University of Strasbourg and is part of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), has indeed developed a revolutionary drug.
No harmful side effects
It is a treatment which acts on the cellular causes of this disease without causing harmful side effects, which is the case with current treatments. According to a study published in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, this drug would have made it possible to reduce the disease in two thirds of the patients. For this discovery, Sylviane Muller has just won the “European Inventor Prize” from the European Patent Office (EPO).
” Sylviane Muller’s invention is a breakthrough in the treatment of this incurable autoimmune disease, which affects the quality of life of millions of people », Estimated the President of the EPO, Benoît Battistelli, when the finalists were announced. ” For the first time, they can hope for a targeted treatment, capable of literally extinguishing lupus “. This treatment could be marketed soon.
