It has happened to me, a 59-year-old woman, that I lost my way a few times. Once in the car, next to my husband who was driving: I no longer recognized the road. Another time I was sorting out the laundry and suddenly I didn’t know where I was. scary. I have an administrative job where nothing disturbing has happened. There is no Alzheimer’s or early dementia in the family. My mother did have a stroke before she was 60.

The symptoms you describe do not indicate dementia, but I do not rule out the possibility that you have had minor TIAs. A TIA (a temporary blockage of a blood vessel in the brain) can take many forms. Given your mother’s history, I’d rather think in that direction. Therefore, discuss it with your doctor. It could also have been a panic attack or ‘nothing’: just a moment of disorientation.
