A weight loss of even 5% would be effective in improving the health of obeseaccording to the results of a study published in the medical journal Cell Metabolism. It would reduce the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses and liver efficiency and tissue quality. An interesting discovery, because it is easier to implement weight loss programs of this magnitude.
Researchers from the University of Washington in St. Louis (USA) did a comparative study with three groups of obese people. The first lost 5% of his weight, the second 10% and the third 15%.
5% weight loss to be healthier
To assess the impact of this weight loss on their health, the scientists measured the fat mass, the insulin level, that of fat in the liver, the glucose level (risk factor for diabetes).
Scientists found that participants who lost 5% of their weight saw their insulin-secreting cells perform better, showed better glucose levels and a 5% decrease in body fat and fat cells liver.
Obese people who lost 15% of their weight regulated their insulin production, but did not see more improvement for their liver and fat cells.
“Continuing to lose weight is a good thing, but not all organs respond in the same way,” says Dr. Samuel Klein, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis.
“While muscle tissue continues to respond more to greater weight loss, liver and fatty tissue achieve optimum benefits with a 5% weight reduction,” concludes the researcher.
