Failing to go to the countryside to recharge your batteries, it could be effective to set up an aquarium in urban spaces, hospitals and apartments. Because, to smile again, it would be effective to contemplate fish evolving in an aquarium for at least 10 minutes.
Researchers from the National Marine Aquarium and the universities of Exeter and Plymouth (United States) took advantage of the renovation of a 550,000 liter aquarium and the introduction of new species, to understand the benefits of an aquarium about health. They observed 100 volunteers and measured their mood, heart rate and blood pressure as the number of fish in the tank increased.
The findings of the study revealed that watching fish in an aquarium lowers blood pressure and slows heart rate. Body modifications that occurred after 10 minutes of contemplation. The researchers also observed that this activity had an effect on mood and that the individuals declared themselves to be more and more happy as the aquarium filled up. This contemplative observation would be relaxing, and would improve concentration.
“This study provides, for the first time, strong evidence that exposure to the underwater environment may have a positive effect on well-being and health,” said Deborah Cracknell, biologist at the National Marine Aquarium.
This study confirms the conclusions of previous experiments which revealed that in geriatrics, it would help people with Alzheimer’s to increase their food intake, and that in child psychiatry, feeding fish helps children with eating disorders. Aquariums would also be able to reduce sensitivity to pain. 5 minutes would be enough to “numb” the pain for 30 minutes.
