At a rate of 6 cups a day, coffee would improve the condition of patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
New asset for coffee. According to a study byUniversity of Naples, a daily consumption would reduce the clinical signs of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
This pathology, also called NAFLD (Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) mainly concerns overweight people, who drink little or no alcohol, and diabetics. In France, it is estimated that it affects 20% of the population.
The study, carried out in mice, was presented at the International Liver Congress, which takes place April 13-17 in Barcelona.
Lower cholesterol levels
The high level of fat in the blood (called hyperlipemia) can cause liver problems, and therefore expose you to steatohepatitis. To assess the effects of coffee on liver fat levels, the researchers analyzed three different groups of mice over twelve weeks. The first group received a standard diet, the other a high fat diet. The third group also benefited from a diet high in fat, but with a coffee solution as a supplement.
The results are convincing. Coffee significantly reverses cholesterol levels and the amount of fat in liver cells. For Laurent Castera, secretary general of the European association for the study of the liver, “the study offers ideas that can help future research and in understanding the therapeutic role that coffee can play in the fight against NAFLD. “.
Coffee reduces the permeability of the intestine
According to the researchers, six cups of coffee for a 70kg person would reduce symptoms and inflammation of the liver. Some studies had already shown that coffee could reduce the symptoms of the disease, but “this is the first time that it has been shown that it can influence the permeability of the intestine”, explains Prof. Vincenzo Lembo, author of the study. Coffee is said to stimulate a protein called Zonulin, which decreases intestinal permeability, which is said to contribute to liver damage.
