This small red algae (Lithothamnium calcareum) which looks like coral, is commonly called maërl. It grows in France, off the Breton coast (Glénans, Baie de Saint-Brieuc, Pimpol), in Norway, Scotland, Ireland. It is appreciated for its extreme richness in marine minerals and trace elements. Its last crystallize on its tiller, which once dried and crushed, becomes a wonderful source of alkaline. Used mainly in organic farming to improve soil structure, it was unfortunately overexploited from the 1970s and many of its habitats, which are very slow to grow, are now threatened. A purely medical operation is to be desired in order to preserve this natural resource.
In case of hyperacidity
Keep theacid-base balance of the body is one of the keys to staying healthy because too much acidity can cause muscle cramps and stiffness but also heartburn and fatigue, or even difficulty concentrating. Thanks to its high rate of calcium carbonate (33%), lithothamne neutralizes this acidity. Take 2 capsules of 750mg, morning and evening, accompanied by vitamin D (in supplement) or cod liver oil to facilitate its assimilation.
To prevent osteoporosis
Lithothamne also helps to preserve bone calcium, which is valuable for preventingosteoporosis. 99% of our calcium is indeed in the bone. This is where the body draws first when it seeks to counterbalance peaks in acidity. Lithothamne thus prevents bone demineralization and allows the skeleton to maintain good density. Take 2 capsules of 750mg, morning and evening, accompanied by vitamin D (in addition) or cod liver oil (in capsules) to facilitate its assimilation.
In support of a convalescence
Rich in calcium, lithothamne also contains a whole army of other minerals and trace elements: magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, etc. It is thus able to globally remineralize the body, which will allow it to regain strength, reduce fatigue and restore appetite. Take 2 capsules of 750mg, morning and evening, accompanied by vitamin D (in supplement) or cod liver oil (in capsules) to facilitate its assimilation.
Are there any precautions for use?
- Be careful not to exceed the recommended doses because too much calcium limits the body’s assimilation of other minerals. It can also exhaust the kidneys and promote stone formation in susceptible people.
- Not recommended in case of‘renal failure
- Risk of interaction with certain gastric dressings based on aluminum hydroxide
- Possible interaction with certain hypertensive drugs and antibiotics. Notify your doctor and / or pharmacist in case of joint intake.
Recipe for infusion against gastric acidity
For a bowl, mix 1 tsp of angelica seed, 1 tsp of thyme, 1 tsp of marjoram, 1 tsp of fine lavender, 1 tsp of chamomile (Roman or German)
Crush the plants before putting them in cold water, then bring them to a simmer. Maintain 2 to 3 minutes then let infuse 10 minutes.
Drink 1 to 2 bowls per day for 2 to 3 weeks

Note that this infusion only protects the intestinal mucous membranes against gastric hyperacidity, without addressing the origin of this acidity. It only makes sense if it is accompanied by a less acidic diet.
