Breaches of hygiene rules prompted the prefect of Gironde to impose a halt to the charcuterie’s activity. Batches infected with listeria had been found.
At the start of the week, the sign Bordelaise delicatessen had had some of its products recalled by the health services, due to potential contamination by the bacteria listeria monocytogenes. This Friday, the Gironde prefecture decided to impose an “immediate stop of production and distribution activities for ready-to-eat meat products” from the Villeneuve d’Ornon company, she explains in a statement.
Only cooked hams and old-style hams will still be sold. Pure pork rillettes, Landes pâtés with Espelette pepper, goose rillettes, duck rillettes, Landes recipe pâtés, Bordeaux grattons and duck liver grattons, these products had already been removed from the shelves of medium and large retail chains. , following the detection of the bacteria in the first two.
Food security breaches
The checks carried out by the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of the Populations (DDPP) prompted the prefect to take more stringent measures. After the presence of listeria monocytogenes in duck rillettes at the distribution stage in supermarkets, the inspectors noted “serious breaches of the regulations relating to the safety of foodstuffs, which must imperatively be remedied”, explains the prefecture.
These shortcomings are the responsibility of the manager of the company, Arnaud Chedhomme, who claimed that his other products were “free from listeria”. The CEO of Charcuterie Bordelaise had already been sentenced in July 2016 to a one-year suspended sentence for not having withdrawn from the market a batch of products contaminated by the same bacteria, at the end of 2015.
A fatal blow?
This new affair threatens the group, which employs about fifty people, according to Arnaud Chedhomme, He had declared, at the time of the withdrawal, “very worried for the future” of his employees and his company. She had suffered significant losses following this first case, during which no consumer nevertheless contracted listeriosis.
Human contamination by this bacterium occurs in particular through cold meats and cheese made from raw milk. It is not trivial. It results, at first, by a fever which can be accompanied by headaches. People who experience symptoms within eight weeks of consuming one of the offending products are advised to consult a doctor, specifying a potential infection by listeria.
Pregnant women are particularly at risk: listeriosis, a disease caused by the bacteria, can lead to spontaneous abortions or premature deliveries, or respiratory problems in the newborn. People who are immunocompromised are also more likely to be affected.
A telephone line has been opened by the company. For any information, consumers can call 05 56 85 87 11.
