A baby born with the brain outside of his skull underwent a six-hour surgical marathon to save his life. Today, he has no consequences.
Jayden Moyo is a young Australian born with the brain outside his skull. An extremely rare scientific case according to the medical profession. Jayden’s deformity was discovered when his mother Thembe was 21 weeks pregnant.
With her husband Sipho, the latter quickly rejected the advice of doctors advising an abortion. The couple’s choice: to attempt a complicated and risky surgery just one week after the birth of the cherub. A team of ten specialized surgeons took turns to work for his recovery. They all had one thing in common: they said they had never seen such a growth.
Encephalocele
Among them, Tim Hewitt. This young plastic surgeon operated on the boy at the Australian clinic in Subiaco. “I had never seen such a large encephalocele,” he told local media.
This anomaly is considered as an exteriorization in the manner of a hernia, on the external face of the skull of a part of the brain. More precisely through an orifice present in the skull. It is often of congenital origin, or occurs as a result of trauma. Jayden Moyo suffered from it resulting in a huge lump smack in the middle of both of his eyes (see photo below).
Now Jayden is saved and rid of his growth. He will only need plastic surgery to remake his nose, which was deformed by the operation. Jayden has now returned to a normal life with his parents. “His permanent smile makes him an amazing boy considering everything he’s been through,” they conclude.
The couple has also set up a charity called “Face Up” to support people with facial abnormalities. For more information, you can visit their site: www.faceup.org.au
