Social Security will reimburse 100% for all exams as part of an IV from this Friday. This concerns consultations, ultrasounds or medical analyzes.
In accordance withcommitment formulated in January 2015 by MarisolTouraine, the Ministry of Health is pleased that all the acts necessary for a voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) are covered 100% from this April 1.
Indeed, consultations, ultrasounds or even medical analyzes, all acts related to an abortion are fully reimbursed. This provision on acts relating to abortion complements the 100% coverage of abortion (intervention) in force since 2013.
The cooling-off period removed
This new step for women’s rights aims to improve access to abortion, in particular by removing financial obstacles. Along the same lines, the ministry also wanted to remove administrative obstacles. The Health Law, published at the end of January 2016, in fact removed the seven-day cooling-off period. This period was kept at two days only for young girls.
Finally, the Health Act also includes measures which extend the offer of local care. Doctors in health centers are now authorized to perform Instrumental abortions, whereas previously they could just perform Medicated abortions. In the same vein, midwives today have the right to perform medical abortions.
As a reminder, in 2013, 229,000 women chose to terminate their pregnancy with an abortion, including 217,000 in Metropolitan France. In this report, the Directorate of research, studies, evaluation and statistics (DREES) indicated that after two consecutive years of decline, the number of abortions was slightly on the rise in France.
The Directorate counted 15.3 acts per 1,000 women of childbearing age. It was 14.5 per 1,000 the year before. But the rate is quite variable, depending on the age group. Among young people, this difference is particularly strong: the rate of abortion is 9.5 per 1,000 in 15-17 year olds and climbs to 21.8 per 1,000 in 18-19 year olds.
