A probiotic bacteria seems to be able to reduce the pain of irritable bowel syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome. But to be effective, it must not act alone.
Researchers from Inserm (National Institute of Health and Medical Research) may have found a way to relieve the pain of patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome, a chronic disease for which it is not there is no effective treatment yet. This solution is in the form of a probiotic bacteria.
A probiotic bacteria
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation … This is the daily life of people suffering from irritable colon. It currently concerns 5% of the population in France. This very debilitating chronic disease does not yet have an effective treatment. But researchers from Inserm (National Institute of Health and Medical Research) may have found a way to relieve the pain of patients.
A probiotic bacteria has recently been used as a treatment. A probiotic is a living organism which, when consumed, acts on the organism. Each probiotic bacteria works in a different way. That tested by researchers from the University and the Toulouse III University Hospital, the bacterium Echerichia coli Nissle 1917 was discovered during the First World War.
A bacterium that does not act alone
Currently, probiotics are popular because they are considered “natural” products. But to reveal their effectiveness, one must know their molecular basis. So, in the case of Echerichia coli Nissle 1917, researchers found that it produces GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). The probiotic must then be mixed with an amino acid and a fatty acid. This allows it to be able to pass the intestinal barrier, to then decrease the activation of sensory neurons and reduce pain. On its own, GABA cannot cross the intestinal barrier. It is the association of the 2 that works.
If this discovery is a breakthrough in research on irritable colon, it also shows how important it is to better understand the exact modes of action of probiotics.
