There are two categories of hemorrhoids: external and internal. When these slide down the anus, hemorrhoidal prolapse occurs and the patient may experience bleeding. Why Doctor takes stock.
There are two categories of hemorrhoids, external and internal hemorrhoids. The latter, as their name suggests, are inside the anus and are not normally visible on the outside. They are formed by veins, small arteries, capillaries and muscle fibers. All these very fine vessels are interlocked and fixed to the wall by a hooking system which keeps them in place inside the anus. But if this suspension system breaks down, the internal hemorrhoids slide down. This is called hemorrhoidal prolapse or internal hemorrhoidal crisis. The latter can become more and more painful and then manifest itself by oozing, pruritus and/or rectal bleeding (digestive bleeding). What exactly happens during a crisis?
“At the beginning, the hemorrhoidal prolapse is felt only when passing the saddle then gradually it comes out during increasingly minimal efforts and in the worst case, it becomes constant: the internal hemorrhoids are now permanently exteriorized”, explains Doctor Philippe Godeberge, gastroenterologist in Paris, in a video for Medical Frequency.
“It is in these cases that the internal hemorrhoids bleed. They bleed but don’t hurt, unlike externals who don’t bleed but hurt. We see that the reasons for consultations and the symptoms can be very varied, especially since two categories of hemorrhoids can co-exist. Indeed, some patients are unlucky and suffer from an external disease and an internal disease”, specifies the specialist.
fiber and laxatives
External hemorrhoids, on the other hand, are venous formations outside the anus. We speak of an external hemorrhoidal crisis or hemorrhoidal thrombosis when a blood clot suddenly forms. A painful ball then appears and is manifested by a feeling of tension and burning.
The hemorrhoidal prolapse being a benign condition, it is especially necessary to fight against the problems of transit and constipation. Specialists therefore recommend eating as much fiber as possible in order to soften the stool. You will find it in legumes (beans, lentils, etc.), cereals and dried fruits. In the event of a crisis, to further improve transit, you can accompany this fiber-rich diet with laxatives. Exonerating suppositories also exist. In case of hemorrhoidal bleeding, there are also local treatments (cream, ointment).
No more smartphones in the toilet
As a general rule, to avoid the occurrence of a hemorrhoid attack, whether internal or external, hydrate yourself sufficiently, eat slowly and exercise daily to boost your transit. Finally, never hold back from going to the seal and don’t stay there longer than necessary. Indeed, the muscles there are relaxed, which leads to an influx of blood. In particular, it has been proven that the use of smartphones in the toilet favored the occurrence of hemorrhoids.
“As tempting as it may be to scroll through your apps on your smartphone while you’re on the toilet, we doctors don’t recommend it (…) Instead, beef up your diet with plenty of fiber, drink enough fluids, exercise exercise regularly and leave your mobile phone behind (or at least locked) when you visit the small corner”, explains doctor Dr Sarah Jarvis, general practitioner and clinical director of the British site patient.info to the site The Sun Online in an article on the subject.
