Social media app Instagram swallows two other apps. Read here which they are and when you can no longer use them.
Techcrunch reports that Instagram is not just saying goodbye to its IGTV app. Social media consultant Matt Navarra and several Twitter users have all noticed that the dedicated Boomerang and Hyperlapse apps are gone. Instagram’s apps have disappeared from the Apple and Google app stores. The Boomerang app is currently still available for Android. This can still be found via a direct link, but searches no longer work within the store.
Instagram swallows two apps
Meta is Instagram’s parent company, and in a statement they say it has retired the software to “better focus its efforts on the main app.” Apptopia data suggest that Boomerang and Hyperlapse were pulled from app stores after March 1. Boomerang (the only one of the two available on both Android and iOS) was still relatively popular, according to Apptopia, averaging 26,000 downloads per day before it took off. Layout is still available if you want to create collages.
Not a surprise
The withdrawal of the apps comes as no surprise. The launches of Hyperlapse in 2014 and Boomerang in 2015 offered stabilized time-lapse and looping videos, at a time when Instagram was trying to keep its app relatively lean. This was mainly due to the lesser performance of some phones at the time.
In 2022, however, Instagram will be pleased with a range of features to fend off rivals, ranging from Snapchat-esque stories to TikTok-esque roles. Boomerang and Hyperlapse are now just camera options. There is little need these days for standalone apps that revolve around a few functions.
