The circadian rhythm, this biological clock which controls several functions of the organism (such as sleep), is influenced by parameters such as variations in temperature or light. It would seem that it is possible to manipulate our biological rhythm thanks to vibrations. This is what British researchers at University College London and Queen Mary University have discovered while experimenting with fruit flies.
In the journal Science, the specialists explain that the exposure of the fly to a cycle of 12 hours of vibration then of silence is enough to synchronize its internal clock with precise daily activities. “The biological clock is regulated, in the fly, not only by the daily cycle of light and temperature, but also by mechanical stimuli which excite sensory receptors in the body”, explains Dr. Joerg Albert, lead author of the study, cited by Naturalworldnews.com.
A way to cure insomnia
This discovery is promising because in humans it implies that certain diseases linked to an imbalance in the biological clock could be cured with vibration therapy. “Our experiments offer a new avenue for adjusting the biological clock which can be useful for the treatment of certain pathologies linked to a disturbance of the circadian rhythm such as insomnia, depression or bipolar disorders”, estimates Ralf Stanewsky, researcher at the ‘University College London, which participated in the study.
