Redness after a tick bite is characteristic of the disease: no doubt, the bacteria are there. A doctor must then be consulted quickly so that he can prescribe an effective treatment. But sometimes erythema migrans may go unnoticed and symptoms, more disabling but also less characteristic, appear months or even years after being bitten. In this case, the doctor may order a serological analysis. From a blood test, we look for the presence of antibodies directed against the bacteria in a test called ELISA. If this turns out to be positive or equivocal, it must be confirmed by a second so-called Western blot test.
