The Impotence Exploration and Treatment Center (CETI) has warned of the risks of cardiovascular disease in patients with erectile dysfunction. Arterial damage has been observed in young men in particular.
- Impotence is considered an erectile disorder when it lasts more than three months and occurs with every sexual intercourse.
- Erectile disorders are much more common from the age of 50, but they can appear at any age.
An erectile disorder or erectile dysfunction is an inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient to have satisfactory sexual intercourse. The erectile disorder is to be differentiated from a sexual breakdown which occurs punctually.
Different causes can explain the appearance of an erection disorder. Certain pathologies such as overweight, obesity or hormonal problems can promote erectile dysfunction. Psychological issues can also impact erectile function. This is particularly the case with anxiety, stress or depression.
Erectile dysfunction: 95% of patients have arterial damage
According to a recent study by the Center for Exploration and Treatment of Impotence (CETI), erectile dysfunction could alert to potential heart failure. To reach this conclusion, the researchers followed 20 patients affected by erectile dysfunction of vascular origin. They then found that their arteries in the penis were damaged.
During the research, the participants had no heart symptoms and no chest pain. They were in good health. For the purposes of the study, the scientists carried out an examination by coroscanner. They then observed that the majority of patients had damage to the coronary arteries. “In 19 out of 20 cases, there was already arterial damage with young subjects, 40 to 50 years old, and all the more severe when they were young. indicated Doctor Ronald Virag, vascular surgeon and specialist in sexual disorders at CETI, to France Inter.
Heart attack: 4 patients operated on to avoid it
Nearly half of the patients had moderate heart failure, but the other volunteers had severe heart damage. Four patients were operated on to prevent the heart attack. “The patient comes to us for an effective treatment for his erectile dysfunction and it turned out that he needed to do a triple coronary bypass since he was threatened with a heart attack. He was spared the heart attack”, explained the specialist to our colleagues.
For patients with moderate heart damage, doctors recommended the establishment of a healthy lifestyle to limit the progression of the disease. In case of erectile problem, it is better to consult a doctor, especially if the patient is affected by diabetes and / or is a regular smoker. This prevention could prevent the development or aggravation of serious cardiovascular diseases.
