Rich in flavanols, chocolate, if eaten in moderation, is good for the heart, the brain and may even lower blood pressure.
- Chocolate significantly reduces the 10-year risk of myocardial infarction.
- People who have consumed the cocoa drink have reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
- Be careful not to abuse hot chocolate because too high in calories, its excessive consumption leads to weight gain and clog the arteries.
To cope with falling temperatures, turning to hot beverages is an option favored by many. Among them, hot chocolate appears to be one of the most beneficial solutions for our health. This was indicated by a study published in September 2015 in the British Journal of Nutrition which recalls that chocolate is rich in flavanol which improves oxygenation of the brain, improves heart health but also reduces blood pressure. Be careful, these benefits can only be obtained by moderate consumption.
Better blood pressure
German researchers from the University of Düsseldorf who conducted the study recommend betting on hot chocolate in winter to protect against cardiovascular disease. “Consumption of cocoa flavanol improves endothelial function in patients with risk factors and cardiovascular disease”, they specify. Flavanols are bioactive compounds naturally present in cocoa beans. They have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory actions and improve the ability of blood vessels to dilate, which allows the body to regulate blood pressure.
This research reveals that flavanol leads to better blood pressure and significantly lowers the 10-year risk of heart attack. Indeed, people who have consumed the cocoa drink have reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Systolic blood pressure was lowered by 4.4 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure reduced by 3.9 mmHg.
Beware of excess
For the study, the researchers followed 100 healthy adults between the ages of 35 and 60. For one month, half of the participants drank a drink containing cocoa flavanols daily, while the other half drank a control drink without cocoa flavanols.
Be careful not to abuse hot chocolate, which can be bad for your health. Too high in calories, its excessive consumption leads to weight gain and clog the arteries. Chocolate can also lead to gastroesophageal reflux, especially if consumed in the evening. Cocoa butter also promotes relaxation of the upper sphincter.
