Over the period 2015-2017, the number ofvoluntary terminations of pregnancy (IVG) has been reduced in hospitals and increased in cities. This is the finding of the Île-de-France Regional Health Observatory in a communicated report this Wednesday, February 27, developed at the request of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and the Ile-de-France Regional Council.
And if the rate of recourse to abortion has remained stable in Île-de-France, strong territorial disparities are still to be highlighted in the region. This concentrates more than a quarter of the stops of unwanted pregnancy on the national territory, recalls the organization in charge of the study.
A transfer of the offer to the city
This shift from hospitals to the city is explained by the practice of abortions by midwives and private doctors. Thus, the number of establishments having carried out at least 50 interventions rose from 90 in 2015 to 79 in 2017. On the contrary, the number of practitioners carrying out it increased from 449 to 483. That is to say a density of 16.2 per 100,000 women in 2017. The number of health centers performing abortions also increased, from 59 to 76.
In total, 52,080 abortions were performed in Île-de-France in 2017, i.e. a recourse rate of 17.4 per 1,000 women of reproductive age. Illustration of sub-regional disparities, this rate goes from 13 per thousand in Yvelines (91) to 22 per thousand in Seine-Saint-Denis (93). The women aged 18 to 34 most resort to an abortion, since half of the procedures concern them. The minors correspond to only 3% of these. A decrease in the number of abortions is also observed in young people under the age of 24.
Medicated abortions, performed earlier
The report also notes an increase in the use ofMedicated abortions in the region, since its rate increased from 59% in 2015 to 67% in 2017. It is the first medical technique to stop an unwanted pregnancy, followed byAbortion by aspiration.
In addition, more and more are realized before 9 weeks of gestation (SA), i.e. the 9 weeks that have passed since the very last period. But still 5% of interventions occur after 12 weeks, the legal interruption period. Once again a symbol of inequalities in the region, the proportion of abortion beyond 12 weeks is higher among women in Seine-Saint-Denis.
