Today, in France, 46% of surgical operations are performed on an outpatient basis: this is the conclusion of a recent report from the Association Française de Chirurgie (AFC), published on September 22, 2017.
This type of care makes it possible to shorten the patient’s hospitalization time to just one day: he is admitted to the hospital in the morning and comes out in the evening, after his operation. The length of stay is therefore less than 12 hours.
However, this average rate hides regional disparities: thus, in the Grand Est and in Bourgogne Franche-Comté, 48% of operations “only” are carried out on an outpatient basis, when this figure reaches 53% in the Pays de la Loire and in the PACA region. . In addition, in this area too, we observe the traditional gap between private (where 59% of surgical operations are performed on an outpatient basis) and public (40.4%). The objective of the AFC? Reach a national average of 66.2% of procedures performed on an outpatient basis by 2020.
Dental extractions and cataracts in outpatient surgery
Obviously, not all surgical procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis. Thus, the AFC explains that 4 areas still have an outpatient treatment rate of less than 50% (breast surgery, ENT surgery, anal surgery outside the tumor, gynecological laparoscopy) when, conversely, 6 areas have a outpatient treatment rate greater than 80% (phimosis, carpal tunnel, multiple tooth extractions, cataracts, Dupuytren and varicose veins). Appendectomy is only performed on an outpatient basis in 1% of cases.
“Among the main obstacles to outpatient care, the poor management of pain, responsible for a third of the causes of secondary hospitalizations or even vomiting, comes first. Patient information and education are key elements in pain management, ”add the specialists, whose annual congress will be held in Paris on September 26 and 27, 2017.
“The intervention of new technologies that build a new connected medicine, allows teleconsultations and remote management of post-operative effects, are all elements that will facilitate intelligent and efficient outpatient practice. “
