The World Health Organization publishes its recommendations to prevent the risk of dementia as it progresses all over the world. 50 million people are affected by dementia in the world. The WHO predicts a tripling of the number of cases in the next few years to reach 152 million people in 2050. “In the next 30 years, the number of people with dementia is expected to triple,” said WHO Director-General , Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a communicated.
Dementia is a syndrome which is manifested by a deterioration of memory, reasoning, behavior and the ability to carry out daily activities, recalls the WHO. It is one of the main causes of disability and dependence among the elderly. There Alzheimer’s diseaseaccounts for 60-70% of dementia cases.
Daily reflexes
Although associated with aging, dementia can also be favored by an unhealthy lifestyle. It is therefore possible to act on a daily basis by changing one’s behavior, believes Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“We must do everything in our power to reduce our risk of dementia. The scientific evidence gathered for these guidelines confirms what we have suspected for some time, that what is good for our hearts is also good for us. our brain”.
The WHO details a few reflexes to adopt that help preserve a healthy brain: “People can reduce their risk of dementia by exercising regularly, avoiding smoking, avoiding harmful use of alcohol, controlling their weighteating healthy and maintaining blood pressure, a cholesterol level and healthy blood sugar.”
