The European Congress on obesity which was held in Vienna has just ended on a scarcely optimistic note. According to specialists, if the obesity rate continues to climb at the current rate, by 2045, 22% of the world population will be obese and 14% will suffer from Type 2 diabetes, that’s one in eight people. By comparison, last year 14% of the world’s population was obese and 9% had type 2 diabetes.
“These figures underscore the mind-boggling challenge the world will face in terms of obesity or developing type 2 diabetes. the medical challenge that this represents, the cost for the health systems of the various countries will be enormous “ Danish and British researchers pointed out. “The first step must be the mobilization of disease prevention resources to slow the progression of these two diseases” insisted Dr. Alan Moses, co-author of the study.
According to the latest OECD report, France has 15% of people suffering from obesity.
