I sometimes suffer from heartburn. What is the best food for me?
Patricia Schutte, nutritionist
If you suffer from heartburn, you can basically eat anything. There is not enough scientific evidence that certain foods help with heartburn. Some people do experience a favorable influence of certain foods on their complaints.
If you suffer from heartburn, you can try the following:
- Avoid heavy meals or very fatty meals. Heavy meals increase the pressure in the stomach and fatty meals stay in the stomach longer. This can make symptoms worse.
- Do not lie down immediately after eating. In a supine position, stomach contents flow back into the esophagus more easily.
- Eat healthy and high in fiber to prevent constipation. Constipation can increase the pressure in the abdominal cavity, causing an upset stomach.
- Try to lose weight if you are overweight. Being overweight can increase the pressure in the abdominal cavity.
Do you often suffer from heartburn? Then contact your doctor.
Do you also have a question? Then ask one of our experts. Always go to your doctor with urgent questions, the experts are not the right person for that. They don’t diagnose either. The other conditions can be found here.
