Creams, tablets or pills
If you suddenly have much more or less discharge or if it changes in odor or color, you may have a yeast infection. This usually goes away on its own, but you can also do something about it. Swallow or smear against fungus.
The treatment of a vaginal yeast infection consists of a cream or tablet. Some products can be bought without a prescription at the pharmacy or drugstore, others are only available with a doctor’s prescription.
Vaginal tablets and cream work equally well. The tablet has the advantage that you only have to use it once, but it does not help with itching of the labia. And the cream does. You put it in the vagina for six days (once a day) and you can rub it on the labia (twice a day) if you itch have.
With both the tablet and the cream, the complaints should diminish within a few days and be gone within a week.
Do it yourself
To prevent fungal infections appearance or speed up recovery, you can try a few things:
- Do not wash your vagina with soap. Rinse with lukewarm water in the shower. The inside of the vagina cleans himself.
- Avoid tight or synthetic pants.
- Don’t walk around with wet underwear or swimwear for too long.
- Avoid panty liners or replace them regularly.
- Change your sanitary towel or tampon regularly when you have your period.
- Take the time to get aroused before sexual intercourse or use a (neutral) lubricant.
To the doctor
The fungal infection does not always go away easily. In some cases it is therefore better to go to the doctor. For example if you:
- You are under sixteen years of age.
- have diabetes.
- long lasting antibiotics used.
- Taking medications that suppress the immune system.
- Have had a vaginal yeast infection more than three times in the past year.
- Have had problems with previous treatment that has not worked well.
- The transition have behind you.
- Have yellow, green and/or strong-smelling discharge.
- You also have other complaints that may indicate a STD.
Your GP can then prescribe another antifungal medicine. In addition to the vaginal tablet and the cream, there are also means to take orally (by mouth).
Repetition
In case of recurring infections, a vaginal tablet or capsule is sometimes prescribed for a longer period of time. You then take the tablet every month on the fifth day after the start of your menstrual period to prevent the fungus from returning. In addition, you can often receive a repeat prescription, so that you can immediately start treatment in the event of a recurrent fungal infection.
And the partner?
Treatment of your partner is only necessary if he himself is also suffering. A yeast infection is not sexually transmitted disease. In addition, everyone already has this fungus on the skin and mucous membranes. In case of complaints such as a rash or itching of the penis, the external cream can be used.
Keep in mind that vaginal tablets and cream can make the rubber of a condom can damage. A condom is therefore less reliable during and up to two days after the treatment.
