- 53 surgeons and anesthetists at Le Mans hospital have submitted their administrative resignation.
- They denounce the lack of staff as well as the deterioration of working conditions and care within their establishment.
- Although they will no longer be responsible for certain administrative tasks, they continue to provide care and operations.
To denounce the deterioration of their working conditions, but also the closing of beds, 53 surgeons and anesthesiologists of the hospital of Le Mans presented their administrative resignation to the Minister of Health François Braun. This letter, sent on March 2, 2023, was also sent to the Regional Health Agency (ARS) as well as to the elected officials of the department.
Shortage of health professionals: 110 interventions removed since 2023
In their mail picked up by the newspaper Actu.frthe doctors explain: “We, surgeons and anesthetists of the Le Mans Hospital Center, can no longer guarantee the mission that a public hospital must fulfill: a public service mission.”
They indicate that they can no longer ensure “correct and humanly bearable conditions of care” due to the lack of resources and health professionals. Hospital tension has, among other things, increased in their establishment after the closure of several hospitals in Sarthe and neighboring departments.
“You may not be aware that this influx of patients has led the management to condemn 60 beds (out of 150) of conventional surgery to accommodate them, for lack of paramedical staff in sufficient numbers to open medicine beds”specifies the collective.
Staff shortages also forced the postponement of 110 scheduled surgeries, some of which involved cancer patients.
The doctors denounce: “It is a real mistreatment, our teams are helpless. The nurses and caregivers tell us, beyond their exhaustion, their incomprehension and their demotivation.”
“Administrative” resignation: care continues to be provided
The resignation of doctors and anesthesiologists only concerns their administrative functions and responsibilities such as the management of the planning of their service or even the participation in certain commissions. On behalf of “Hippocratic oath”they intend to continue to treat and operate on their patients.
This is not the first time that health professionals have given up their administrative functions. There had already been a wave of resignations in 2020 to denounce their poor working conditions, the shortage of staff and the deterioration in the quality of patient care in France.
