the burn out does not spare psychiatrists. Two-thirds of them often or always say they are tired, concludes a survey by the Psychiatry Review the Brain, conducted among 820 psychiatrists. More than 55% of respondents consider their work to be emotionally draining to a high or very high degree, according to this study. Many of his respondents claim to be “at the end of their rope” due to this state of emotional fatigue. This survey puts the finger on a phenomenon of professional burnout which increasingly affects health professionals, from maternity staff, to hospital nurses, including general practitioners.
Psychiatrists would therefore also be exposed to this syndrome due to a difficult workload and budget cuts. But exhaustion is not only professional, it also affects the personal sphere. “Nearly 66% of us say they are exhausted, and 89% frustrated: the problem is not our core business but working conditions, administrative overload, societal demand”, specifies Dr David Gourion psychiatrist at Paris, quoted by The Doctor’s Daily.
The survey shows that hospital practitioners and heads of clinics, followed by department heads, are among those most affected by this psychological suffering. If burnout strikes all ages, women are more exposed to the phenomenon, according to the Daily Doctor.
The Minister of Health promises more means
In recent weeks, strike movements have taken place in various psychiatric establishments to denounce working conditions and the lack of infrastructure funding. The fed up seems to have been heard by the Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn who promised this Friday, January 26 more means, closing of the Congress of the brain in Paris, devoted to psychiatry. “Psychiatry will no longer be the poor relation. Rest assured, because I make it a health priority,” she said, quoted by AFP.
