August 5, 2003 – Several studies may attribute to green tea impressive anticancer virtues, scientists have never succeeded in unraveling the secret of its effectiveness … until now.
Researchers have found that various carcinogens, such as tobacco smoke and dioxins, manipulate a molecule called HA, which then allows them to attack a healthy cell and turn it into a cancer cell.
However, in tests in mice, the researchers established that two products found in green tea, EGC and EGCG, prevent carcinogens from binding to the HA molecule, which, in theory, should protect the healthy cell. Preliminary results indicate the same effect would occur in humans1.
EGC and EGCG closely resemble other flavonoids that are also credited with anti-cancer properties. These flavonoids are found in broccoli, cabbage, grapes, and red wine.
