If the penalty explodes again and now attacks the weight of cars, the cost of the tax horse should remain stable in 2022 for most French people. But this regional tax is still increasing sharply in Martinique and the Grand Est, as well as in Brittany more modestly.
In new as in second hand, the price of a registration certificate, more commonly called gray card, is the result of several taxes. The most impressive and high profile is undoubtedly the ecological penalty, which can reach up to € 40,000 depending on CO emissions.2 This year ! The big novelty of 2022 is the addition of a new penalty on the weight which starts at 1,800 kg. Each additional kilo is charged 10 €. But these two taxes are far from affecting all French people: they are intended only for new vehicles and those imported from abroad. For used models already registered in France, which constitute the vast majority of sales, it is above all the regional tax (Y.1), based on the number of fiscal horses, which counts.
Increase in Brittany, Martinique and in the Grand Est
As its name suggests, its amount is set by the various regional councils, or by the communities in Corsica and in the overseas territories. Organizations to which the proceeds of the revenues thus generated then return. For 2022, as in 2021, the majority of them have chosen to opt for the status quo. But in the Grand Est region, after heated debates, an increase of six euros was finally decided. From the 1er February, the tax horse should thus drop from € 42 to € 48. We will thus be well above the national average, which stands at € 43.7 in mainland France.
Martinique, which was one of the cheapest territories, strikes even harder with an increase of € 21! It is thus aligned with Reunion with a price of € 51 per tax horse, while Mayotte remains at € 30. As for Brittany, it voted for an inflation of 0.69%, or 35 cents. Not enough to be in panic, but it thus symbolically becomes the most expensive region in France with 15 cents ahead of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur …
