A study published on April 12 shows that night owls develop more cardiovascular disease and psychological disorders than others. The risk of mortality is higher for this population. Explanations.
Unpublished British study on late sunsets
The study published on April 12 in the magazine Chronobiology International is the result of work that spanned over six years in the UK. English researchers already knew the health consequences – such as higher risk of diabetes – late sunsets. This time around, they looked to see if the death rate is higher among night owls.
The numbers speak for themselves. Half a million people aged 38 to 73 participated in this study. Results : the death rate is 10% higher in late night owls. There are also more psychological disorders, intestinal problems, cardiovascular disease and therefore heart attacks in these people.
Can we change things?
” It is a public health problem that can no longer be ignored Says Malcolm von Schantz, professor of chronobiology at the University of Surrey. One of the solutions considered would be to allow these night owls to work later in the morning and evening. They would sleep more and would not suffer from a lack of sleep that is harmful to the whole body.
Researchers are also advancing the track of removing the summer schedule change. During this period, the number of heart attacks increases, especially in night owls. Any advice for a night owl? Try to go to bed earlier on a regular basis, see fewer people at night, reduce your consumption of tobacco, alcohol or drugs, and turn off screens at least an hour before bedtime.
