All the means are good to fight against obesity, in particular its most severe form which would affect nearly 1% of the French population. The installation of a gastric band, which consists in bypassing the stomach by a bypass, gives convincing results in precise indications. In 2010, 28,000 people in France benefited from this technique. Good news, a Swedish study has just shown that this surgery would also have positive effects on the heart and blood vessels.
Results which, a priori, are not surprising: losing weight amounts to “saving” your heart. But what seems logical had never been proven! On the contrary: some studies had shown that losing weight medically, that is to say by changing the way you eat and exercising, had no positive effect on the cardiovascular system.
Swedish scientists have shown that the weight loss obtained through obesity surgery reduces mortality from cardiovascular complications. With astonishing figures 33% decrease in the risk of having a first myocardial infarction or 1time stroke for those who have had surgery versus those who have been on a diet. Moreover, if a heart or vascular accident occurs, the risk of dying from it is significantly reduced. Results from a study that followed over 4,000 obese people for 15 years. They had been divided into 2 groups: half surgery, half diet and physical activity. And regardless of the surgical technique, stomach ring or bypass, the benefit to the heart and vessels is the same.
the Prof. Xavier Girerd, cardiologist at La Pitié Salpètrière (Paris), comments on the results obtained in people who, in addition to their pathological obesity, had type 2 diabetes.
Today, specialists are trying to understand why surgery does better on the heart and vessels than conventional treatment. Especially since these good results are not linked to the importance of the initial obesity. But beware, this surgery only concerns severe forms. and is often accompanied by side effects and complications: one third of patients need to be operated again.
