In France, 15.3% of adults are obese according to a survey published in May 2017 by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Precisely: this Wednesday, September 5, 2018, the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs (Igas) published a report who has a keen interest in obesity surgery, also known as bariatric surgery.
First observation: in the space of just 10, the number of operations – for the placement of a gastric band, for a gastric bypass or for a sleeve gastrectomy – has multiplied by 10 to reach 60,000 in 2016 .
Bariatric surgery, “an intervention of last resort”
Although specialists claim that “bariatric surgery is an intervention of last resort”, to be considered only “in the event of failure of medical treatment, when the state of health of the person suffering from severe or morbid obesity is likely to improve. degrade if nothing is done to allow it to lose weight “, this boom can be explained” quite logically by the increase in needs, the wide accessibility of the offer and the attractiveness of the intervention “.
In addition, experts from the Igas see it as “a failure to prevent obesity”. Worse: according to this report, some interventions would be “excessive or badly put” and “there are significant gaps in the preparation of people and in the post-operative follow-up (half of the people operated on are not followed or insufficiently, while this ‘is a condition for preventing certain risks and optimizing the effects of surgery) ”. Worrisome!
To improve the situation, the Igas recommends in particular to “strengthen and renovate the system of the 37 specialized obesity centers created following the 2011-2013 obesity plan”. To be continued.
