We wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve never heard of Matthew Carter or Max Miedlinger. Maybe John Baskerville will ring a bell or else Claude Garamond. You might have seen the last two as font names and indeed … they are all typographers, the first two of which we know from Verdana and Helvetica, among others. If you want to design a font that can last for decades or even centuries, you have to sit down for a while, but if there is one free program that can do it, it is Birdfont. It takes some study but is well worth the effort.
