Consumed in moderation, coffee has many virtues, including improving our vision.
- The DVA plays an important role in many situations, such as during ball sports or driving a car.
- Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) is defined as “the ability of the eye to identify details when there is movement between the object and the observer (Miller and Ludvigh/1962)”.
Coffee improves our visual abilities, according to a new study published in the journal Psychopharmacology. “The main objective of this research was to determine the effects of caffeine intake on dynamic visual acuity (DVA)”, explain the scientists in the preamble.
21 caffeine consumers tested
To do this, they included 21 coffee consumers in their cohort. For two days and following a random order, the participants ingested either caffeine (4 mg) or a placebo. “The DVA was measured 60 minutes after ingestion of the corresponding capsule, thanks to a new software”, say the researchers.
They then found that the DVA was more accurate and faster after caffeine ingestion, especially with regard to targets moving horizontally.
“ergogenic effect”
“Our data indicate that taking one capsule containing 4 mg of caffeine has an ergogenic effect on the DVA, which can be particularly interesting in contexts requiring precise and rapid detection of moving targets”, conclude the researchers.
Despite its small size, France is the world’s seventh largest coffee market behind Brazil, the United States, Germany, Indonesia, Japan and Italy. Sales of this “black gold” reached 2.794 billion euros in 2018 in our supermarkets.
