The National Health Security Agency (ANSES) indeed received two reports in 2019 acute life-threatening hepatitis, likely to be linked to the consumption of this dietary supplement. “The two women, aged 29 and 36, had to be hospitalized and one of them had to receive an emergency liver transplant. Both were taking an oral contraceptive. in his alert.
What can be the causes?
According to ANSES, the responsibility of the food supplement in the occurrence of these two severe acute hepatitis is very likely. Several hypotheses are possible:
- A complex effect of the combination of the many ingredients of the product.
- Interaction with other substances, especially those contained in oral contraceptives.
- Possible contamination or adulteration, that is to say the addition of a substance fraudulently.
The Health Security Agency therefore recommends avoiding multiple, prolonged or repeated intakes of food supplements during the year, without having taken advice from a health professional (doctor, dietitian, etc.). But also to respect the conditions of use and to report to a health professional any undesirable effect which would occur following the consumption of a food supplement.
