It has become known what it cost HBO to make the flopped Game of Thrones sequel. And yes, it runs into the tens of millions.
An epic series unfortunately ended in a less epic way. Game of Thrones is still a very popular series. Except the last season. Fans prefer to flush the toilet that last season. HBO also realized that it was a shame not to do anything with such a well-known and successful title anymore. There had to be another series. Think of Better Call Saul, the spin-off of Breaking Bad.
House of the Dragon is the prequel to be released on HBO Max in 2022. But that wasn’t the only idea for a Game of Thrones spin-off. Where House of the Dragon actually got the green light, another spin-off didn’t end well. And that cost a lot of money.
A cast had already been selected, a script written and even a pilot shot. According to Insider this joke cost $30 million. Doubts began to arise among the makers whether this new series could carry the level of Game of Thrones as a direct successor. That doubt eventually killed the series and this first spin-off never materialized.
