Dry skin, cough and nose cold
Autumn is just around the corner and it brings all kinds of inconveniences with it. Well-known autumn ailments are a runny nose, cough, dry skin and dry lips. What causes these ailments and what can you do best about it?
One of the most common autumn ailments is a runny nose, or a cold in the nose. This is an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose and sinuses. This causes complaints such as a stuffy nose and sneezing.
A nasal spray often helps. A spray dissolves the mucus. Do not use too much of the nasal spray and do not use it for more than a few days. This can be harmful to the mucous membrane.
Cough
Coughing is also common during the fall. There are two types of cough; a dry cough and a lingering cough. The dry cough is also sometimes called tickling cough or tickling cough. You will not cough up mucus, but you will get a painful feeling in your throat and airways.
If you suffer from a dry cough, it is best to avoid smoke, cold and drafts. A licorice, a candy or a spoonful of honey are often pleasant. You can also buy a cough syrup or cough tablet at the drugstore or pharmacy.
With a stuck cough there is mucus in the airways and you have to cough to loosen this mucus. This is especially common in the morning. When the mucus is gone, the coughing also goes away.
Drinking a lot, especially hot drinks, thins the mucus and makes it easier to cough up. And just like with dry cough, a drop, candy or spoonful of honey can help here. If the mucus does not want to come loose, you can go to the drugstore or pharmacy for a cough syrup or tablet.
Dry skin and lips
In the fall, the temperatures outside drop and we turn on the heating inside. The cold air from outside and the warm dry air from the heater can cause dry skin. This gives a tight feeling and sometimes even itchy.
To prevent the skin from becoming too dry, you can apply a cream or lotion. This way you maintain the moisture balance in your skin. The lips are one of the most sensitive areas on your body. They also suffer the most from the cold. The lips become dry and chapped and may eventually crack. Chapped and cracked lips feel uncomfortable and hurt.
The best solution for dry and chapped lips is a lip balm. This prevents dehydration due to wind and cold. Try not to lick your lips too much when it’s cold. And, as difficult as it may be, never pull the loose sheets.
