Mozilla’s Firefox browser can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Store as of today. This has not been possible until now due to the stricter access policies of the past.
Previously, Firefox was not welcome in the Microsoft Store because the browser runs on an engine developed by Mozilla itself, Gecko. Until recently, Microsoft only allowed browsers in its download store that are built on the Blink engine, part of Chromium. Such as the Edge browser and Google Chrome, although the latter is also still not available in the Microsoft Store.
An important advantage of the Microsoft Store version of Firefox, is that it can also be installed on Windows computers in S mode. This is because no software can be installed on it outside the Microsoft Store. Furthermore, it makes no difference whether you install Firefox via this route, or via the Firefox website as usual.
New policy
Still, it’s an important development, as it shows that Microsoft’s new Store policy is slowly but surely starting to pay off. Previously, the requirements were so strict that many software developers did not bother to offer their programs/apps in the Microsoft Store. The company is loosening the reins more, and is now also attracting major players such as Mozilla.
