About fifteen children and adolescents were infected with staphylococcus aureus in Haute-Corse. The transmission appears to have taken place at a party in early August.
In Haute-Corse, in the Vivario region, around fifteen children were infected with staphylococcus aureus. They presented with benign skin sores like abscesses, boils, folliculitis or impetigos on the legs and elbows.
“The only possible link for the people concerned is contamination of the water games from an inflatable structure installed for the feast of the 1er August in Vivario, a structure which is not the cause of the infection but which was a facilitating factor for human-to-human transmission (close contacts) ”, indicates Jean-Jacques Coiplet, Director General of the Regional Health Agency (ARS ) from Corsica.
Rarely severe
All children and adolescents, aged 5 to 12 depending on Corsica Morning, were taken care of and received antibiotic treatment and ointment. The ARS calls on all those who participated in the party in Vivario at the beginning of August and who present the skin signs of the infection to go to a doctor.
At the same time, investigations were initiated by the General Directorate of Health (DGS) and the Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) in order to assess the risks and identify the source of infection. “All the tests carried out so far, especially at the water level, have turned out to be negative,” revealed Hyacinthe Raffiani, mayor of the small village, questioned by our colleagues.
In addition, the ARS is reassuring and specifies that Staphylococcus aureus infections are very rarely responsible for severe infections.
