May 24, 2011 – Pharmacologists, pharmacists, chemists, immunologists will attend the 8e Canadian Society for Research on Natural Health Products (NHRSV) symposium which will take place May 24-27 in Montreal.
Among the topics discussed during the conference, the anticancer properties of several plant extracts (dandelion, ginseng, turmeric, etc.) will be presented by a series of researchers from several Canadian universities.1. A section on traditional anti-diabetic plants from various countries and interactions between drugs and NHPs are also on the program.
“As with every conference, there is also a session on product quality. Our mission indeed includes the implementation of processes that ensure the quality of natural health products that arrive on store shelves, ”says Alain Cuerrier.2, vice-president of the SCRPSN and botanist at the Montreal Botanical Garden.

This conference also aims to strengthen the bridge between the world of herbalists and that of scientific research. “The arsenal we have in science is precious and allows for rigorous testing. But people who do herbal trials tend to ignore the knowledge of herbalists rather than take advantage of it and incorporate it into their protocols. We don’t know each other well on both sides and we are wary instead of collaborating, deplores Alain Cuerrier. It is time to recognize the strengths and limitations of the two approaches and ultimately bring the benefits of the integration of these two approaches to the consumer. “
This year, the SCRPSN is holding its conference with three other partners who work mainly in the pharmaceutical field.3. “Many of our members are also part of these societies,” explains Alain Cuerrier. It was therefore natural and desirable to form an alliance for this conference. “
What is the SCRPSN?
Pierre Haddad
Founded in 2003, this company came into being, in a way, through the Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD) of Health Canada. “Throughout the implementation of the NHP regulations, this directorate organized meetings between researchers, industry and government representatives. We decided to continue working together in a non-profit organization, says Pierre Haddad, full professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Montreal and co-founder of the SCRPSN.
The mission of this group, which has 125 members, is to promote rigorous scientific research in the field of natural health products. “Thanks to a network that brings together biologists, botanists, nutritionists, clinicians and government and industry representatives, we have three objectives: quality, efficacy and safety of NHPs,” summarizes Pierre Haddad.
It should also be remembered that several members of the SCRPSN regularly collaborate with PasseportSanté.net as scientific reviewers of the sheets on natural health products.
