Faced with the nearly 30% increase in hospitalizations in the week of June 22, the governor of California has reinstated the closure of bars in Los Angeles. Six other counties are also affected.
As deconfinement accelerates in many European countries, part of the United States is backtracking. Less than three weeks after bars in California reopened on June 12, California Governor Gavin Newsom reinstated their closures in Los Angeles and six other counties on Sunday, June 28.
“Due to rising Covid-19 cases, California orders bars to close in Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, San Joaquin and Tulare”, he tweeted. Elsewhere, the Democrat recommended that Contra Costa, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Stanislaus and Ventura counties do the same.
A nearly 30% increase in hospitalizations
With the final say on the reopening of bars having been left to authorities in California’s 58 counties, establishments in Los Angeles had started welcoming customers again from June 19. However, the number of Covid-19 cases has recently started to rise again in the state, with a nearly 30% increase in hospitalizations in the week of June 22, according to AFP, whose 20 minutes echoed in particular.
“We cannot continue as we have been doing for the past few weeks.had warned the governor. I’m not naive, people mix and that increases the spread of this virus”. While California was the first state to implement general containment at the end of March, Los Angeles has the highest number of confirmed cases: 95,385, compared to 26,661 for New York. On the other hand, California reached seventh place in the sad ranking of the most bereaved states, with 5,932 deaths.
Closure of bars in Texas and Florida
The United States remains the country most affected by Covid-19, with 125,803 dead in total and more than 2.5 million confirmed cases. The resurgence of the epidemic affects the entire south and west of the country, and has forced the governors of Texas and Florida to order bars to close again. Conversely, the spread of the virus is declining in the North East, which has long been the epicenter of the pandemic.
