Facebook Messenger groups have end-to-end encryption

Facebook Messenger groups can now rely on user-to-user encryption. That goes for chats and phone calls.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, among others, still does not offer encrypted communication by default for the Facebook and Instagram apps. But meanwhile, the giant company is taking small steps towards end-to-end encryption. So now the groups on Messenger can count on that technology.

It does not matter whether you are chatting or having a telephone conversation. And it doesn’t matter whether you have that conversation via audio or video. The communication within groups is now encrypted. Previously, that encryption was only available for one-to-one conversations within Secret Conversation mode. The fact that more conversations are now encrypted improves the privacy of Facebook Messenger users.

In addition, as a user you will receive a notification when someone takes a screenshot of messages that delete themselves over time. However, it will take a few weeks before everyone receives the update on their smartphone, but the update is on the way.

Earlier, Meta’s online security officer, Antigone Davis, said that the company takes the time to encrypt its products. The company “really wants to do it right”. That is why it will take at least until sometime in 2023 before all apps from the company offer proper encryption.
