The Essure female sterilization method involves placing an implant in each uterine tube, naturally. This triggers scarring that obstructs the passage to the ovaries, making fertilization impossible.
Other side of the coin: many patients have reported often heavy and severe side effects: pelvic, back and muscle pain, bleeding periods, allergic and autoimmune reactions, chronic fatigue, depression … Some of them have even decided to initiate legal action.
Establish the benefit / risk ratio of the device
Faced with these reports, the National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety announces the creation of a Temporary Specialized Scientific Committee (CSST). This committee, made up of independent experts, is responsible for giving an opinion on the benefit / risk ratio of the system. Stakeholders will be heard, thus allowing experts to base their opinion on scientific data and feedback on real-life use of the device.

Thus, the Mutual Aid Support and Information Network on Tubular Sterilization (RESIST), Family Planning, the National Association of Abortion and Contraception Centers (ANCIC) and the National College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF) will share April 19, during a time of the day devoted to hearings with stakeholders, data, field experiences and testimonies.
The recommendations of these experts will be made public in the following weeks.
