This is not the first time that scientists have found a link between epilepsy and ADHD (attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity). But this new study can be noticed because of its very large number of participants (almost a million people) and its duration (22 years).
This study involved a thousand children born in Denmark between 1990 and 2007 and who were followed until 2012. The researchers found that children who had epilepsy were three times more likely to also have ADHD compared to children without epilepsy. They also found an increase in ADHD of around 30% in children who had seizures due to fever.
“The link between these two pathologies is not surprising” underlines Dr Josiane Lajoie neuro-pediatrician at Langone hospital in New York (United States). “They both find their origin in the central nervous system”.
But while the researchers found a link between the two diseases, they could not prove that there would be a cause and effect link.
