Ford to Double Production of the F-150 Lightning
Not everyone is convinced of a fully electric future. Especially the people in the comments on Facebook are skeptical about the switch from petrol engines to electric motors. Another group that you would expect to be the last to make the switch now seems to be tackling faster than previously thought: pick-up buyers. According to Reuters Ford is doubling the production targets of its electric pickup, the F-150 Lightning.
The electric pick-up is coming next year
Ford’s electric pickup should appear in 2022. Production is slowly starting and the original plan was to build about 40,000 petrol-free pick-ups by 2024. This number would now have been scaled up to no less than 80,000 copies per year. Next year, 15,000 should leave the factory, 55,000 in 2023 and for the next generation (coming in 2025), Ford wants to produce 160,000 electric pick-ups per year. Currently, 120,000 F-150 Lightnings have been ordered.
Tesla Cybertruck is also going well
Tesla can also count on many orders for their electric pickup. The Cybertruck has already been pre-ordered more than 1.2 million times. The buyers had to make a small deposit to get on the waiting list. It is important to know that you can cancel at any time and get your money back. In any case, there is a lot of interest in the electrical workhorses. There are also quite a few advantages for workmen; a lot of torque and the possibility to connect tools, for example.
Big market for pick ups
These are large numbers, but the majority are still going for the petrol versions for the time being. Annual sales of the Ford F-150 with a conventional engine are close to 800,000 units. Other brands such as Ram, Chevrolet and GMC also sell more than a million pickups combined. These are not all V8 engines anymore, by the way. Many pickups already have V6 engines and in some cases even four-cylinder.
