What are the different types of nursing homes and who are they for?
There are different types of nursing homes or nursing homes in France. There are 3 main ones: traditional EHPADs, Alzheimer EHPADs which can accommodate people with Alzheimer’s disease and Long-Term Care Units (USLD) which accommodate elderly people in need of constant medical supervision.
These establishments can be public, associative or private. There are nearly 8,000 EHPADs in France, their median price being €2,130 according to UFC Que Choisir. The cost of an EHPAD differs according to the status of the establishment, its geographical location, the level of services offered and its modernity. It should be noted that various financial aids exist to help families bear part of this cost, we can cite in particular: APA, Social assistance or even APL.
How to choose the right EHPAD?
Some websites like www.logement-seniors.com/maisons-retraite.php list all the establishments and highlight the EHPADs that have places available. They can be a useful source of information that will save you time but, in any case, it will be up to you to choose your establishment. It is therefore necessary to be familiar with the main criteria to be taken into account when choosing an EHPAD:
– Preferably choose an EHPAD that is close to the family in order to make visits easier, essential to the well-being of the elderly person,
– It is important to visit several establishments and meet the management staff in order to get an idea of the seriousness of the establishment, its comfort and the attention given to the residents,
– Ask for the composition of the medical and paramedical staff, to ensure that they meet the needs of your loved one,
– Find out about the activities offered (singing, painting, various workshops, etc.) and their frequency,
– Finally, ask for a copy of the residence contract, the rules of procedure and look carefully at the rates charged. Some services may be in addition to the daily price.
