He was 15 years old and his name was Nathan Gbotoe. This teenager died of Ebola virus Monday, November 23, 2015 in a hospital in Paynesville, near the capital Monrovia, Liberia. However, in September 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the end of the epidemic in Liberia. This death is the first fatal case in this country since July 2015.
Maintain prevention mechanisms
This teenager was one of the three new cases reported on November 20, 2015. Her 10-year-old brother and their father have also tested positive for the virus. “Our surveillance system will take charge of these new cases, we have the means to take the necessary measures and we will do it immediately. Whenever Liberia is declared free from Ebola, we tell the public that we must maintain the prevention system that has allowed us to reach this stage.” said on the RFI antenna Dr Francis Kateh, Director of Health in Liberia.
Over 11,000 deaths
Since the start of the epidemic in West Africa (Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia) in December 2013, the Ebola virus, or hemorrhagic fever, has caused more than 11,000 deaths. It is transmitted from person to person through direct contact of injured skin with blood, secretions or body fluids from infected people or with contaminated surfaces. It also appears that this virus can be transmitted sexually.
