According to a recent American study, eating fatty fish at least twice a week helps protect our hearing.
Obviously, everything is good in fish. Indeed, its beneficial effects for memory have been known for a long time. Recent studies have proven the therapeutic virtues of fatty fish oils (sardines, tuna, salmon) against dementia, Alzheimer’s and prostate cancer. And according to a recent study published in the American Journal of clinical nutrition, omega3s are also good for hearing.
Better blood circulation
Consuming fatty fish at least twice a week would protect against presbyacouphonia, an age-related hearing loss (equivalent to presbyopia for vision.) To come to this conclusion, researchers from the medical school from Harvard analyzed the medical records of 65,000 women. The latter were followed for 20 years, by answering questionnaires on their eating habits and the quality of their hearing. At the end of two decades, the researchers found that the hearing of women accustomed to eating fish at least twice a week is preserved 20% better than that of others.
“These results are undoubtedly due to the fact that the consumption of long-chain Omega-3 foods, such as fatty fish, contributes to better blood circulation in the ear,” concludes Dr. Sharon Curhan, lead author of the study. .
Small downside: the study only included women, the researchers are not able to say whether the beneficial effect of oily fish also applies to men’s hearing.
