As summer approaches, some take it into their heads to lose a few pounds and some that need to go through drastic diets that ban the consumption of sugar. Nay! On the contrary, a diet low in protein and high in carbohydrates would be better for the metabolism than a restrictive low-calorie and low-carbohydrate diet. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by the University of Sydney, Australia.
The researchers basically remind us of what we already know, namely that it is better to eat everything in moderation than to traumatize your body with harmful food restrictions in the long term. The Australians support their argument in the scientific journal Cell reports. They divided 90 mice into three groups and put them on separate diets for eight weeks. Then they compared the health results (cholesterol level, insulin level in the blood), and the weight of the rodents.
A first group had unlimited access to food. The second followed a restricted calorie diet, up to 40% of the caloric intake of the unlimited diet. The third group followed one of three diets: a diet low in protein but high in carbohydrates; a medium protein and carbohydrate diet; a high protein and low carbohydrate diet. All the diets had 20% fat and the same number of calories per gram.
Carbohydrates, good for your health
At the end of the experiment, the low calorie diet showed more results in terms of short term weight loss. But on overall health, the researchers conclude that we derive more long-term benefits from eating more carbohydrates while consuming protein in moderation. The latter diet has been shown to be more virtuous on the insulin level (higher level) and on the cholesterol level (which it has helped to reduce) than the others. “Mice get the same benefits from a low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet as from a 40% calorie restriction,” said Stephen Simpson, lead author of the study, cited by Why Doctor. a few fanatics, no one can sustain such a reduction over the long term, and doing so can lead to loss of bone mass, libido and fertility. “
Morality, no question of cut out good carbs. To stay healthy without gaining weight, on the other hand, it is better to limit products rich in refined sugars (white sugars, white flour) and industrial sugars.
