The Canal+ television channel is going to set up subtitles specially developed for dyslexic people who have reading difficulties so that they can, like everyone else, watch programs in their original version.
- The Canal television channel will offer subtitles specially developed for people with dyslexia.
- These can also be read by those who do not suffer from dyslexia.
- These subtitles will first be offered on the myCANAL platform.
“Baptized Dystitles” is the name of the subtitles specially designed for people with dyslexia that the Canal+ television channel will soon be offering, first on its myCANAL platform. To access it, users will only have to put the option in the language and subtitle settings menu.
Subtitles for dyslexic and non-dyslexic people
Concretely, the letters are written in black but white surfaces are inserted inside or around, totally or in part, to facilitate reading. A particular typography so that the subtitles are “suitable (…) for both dyslexic and non-dyslexic peopleindicates Béatrice Sauvageot, president of the association Pouvoir Dys, who worked on their elaboration, in a press release published on April 25, 2023. A design that matches the way [le] brain [des personnes dyslexiques] perceives the letters.“
In France, 4 to 5% of pupils in an age group are dyslexic, according to the French Federation of Dys (FFDys), which means that they have difficulty learning to read. Specific learning disabilities, including dyslexia, are long-lasting. But taking care of them makes it possible to improve and/or compensate for deficient functions.
Improving the reading quality of people with dyslexia
On a daily basis, people with dyslexia have difficulty reading classic typography. They “must take the time to decipher each word to understand its meaning and therefore do not always have time to read the subtitles of a scene before these disappear”, can we read in the press release.
“We have done tests with our subscribers, says Gérald-Brice Viret, general manager of Canal+ France. The feedback is extremely positive. We will make a progress point at the start of next season and the year 2024.“If the initiative appeals, the group may integrate these subtitles“more broadly thereafter in its program offer“.
