Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers
I have a very dry mouth, especially at night. Could 2x 40mg of omeprazole be the cause?
Dry mouth can have several causes, medication is one of them. Many drugs have the side effect of inhibiting the salivary glands. Too little saliva gives a dry and sticky feeling in the mouth. At night it is worse because saliva production is almost at a standstill. Unlike with thirst, you cannot easily drink dry mouth with a glass of water due to medicines. In your case it may be possible to reduce the dose of omeprazole in consultation with the doctor. You can also try to stimulate saliva production with chewing gum or peppermint. There are also remedies for sale at pharmacies and drugstores (mouth rinse, spray or gel) that can provide relief.
Also send in your medicine request. That’s possible here.
