The curtain falls again for drone king DJI, now that the United States continues to sabotage that company.
DJI is the undisputed king of drones. The Chinese tech brand makes quality drones for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the United States has been on a witch-hunt against China’s alleged state-owned companies ever since Trump’s rule. Now it is actually time for DJI, because the company is now on the blacklist. It is an extra measure after a first ban last year.
DJI on the blacklist
The blacklist is a wide selection of banned Chinese companies. American companies are not allowed to trade with those companies. Now there is a ban on investments. We all know the story of Huawei. They were banned for relatively minor proven offenses. Today, the smartphone maker has been pushed completely into the abyss by the blacklist.
The reason for banning the drone brand is a bit more concrete than the reason behind Huawei’s destruction. According to the US government, DJI drones would be used to monitor the Uyghurs, an oppressed Muslim minority in China, reports Financial Times (paywall, via Reuters).
Practically, DJI’s ban doesn’t mean we can’t buy any more drones from the brand here. It is mainly the interaction between third parties in the US and the brand that is more difficult now.
The US Department of Commerce immediately puts many other Chinese companies on the list. Megvii, Dawning Information, CloudWalk Technology and Xiamen Meiya Pico are now also on it. These are all companies that specialize in cloud technology, facial recognition and other leading techniques.
