If you are a fan of “tea time”, know that this habit is potentially a factor of longevity. In any case, the flavonoids, the antioxidants contained in tea, would protect against the risk of premature death, according to a study conducted by French researchers. Professor Nicolas Danchin from the center for preventive medicine in Paris compared the lifestyle of consumers of tea on the one hand and coffee on the other, as well as the impact of these drinks on their health.
A total of 131,401 people aged 18 to 95 participated in the study between 2001 and 2008. 95 of them died of cardiovascular causes and 632 died of non-cardiovascular causes.
In the tea vs. coffee match, it’s the tea that wins easily. Tea drinkers are distinguished by a healthier lifestyle than coffee drinkers. The latter have a higher cardiovascular risk profile than non-coffee lovers since this consumption goes hand in hand with higher smoking. In addition, coffee aficionados are on average less physically active than non-drinkers (41% versus 45% of them).
Take tea, not coffee
For their part, tea consumers have a more enviable cardiovascular risk profile. Unlike coffee, among tea enthusiasts, smoking seems to decrease with the number of cups. Another sign that theine is correlated with a healthy lifestyle, “theinomaniacs” seem more inclined to play sports, since data shows that physical activity increases with consumption. Finally, drinking tea lowers blood pressure, while coffee has no effect.
“Tea lowers the risk of non-cardiovascular death by 24%”, observes Nicolas Danchin. Interestingly, this benefit would be more obvious for smokers or former smokers. From there to deduce that tea cancels the dangers of smoking, there is a gap that researchers do not dare to cross.
